Etymology

'Land where stirks or young cattle were pastured', v. stirc , land , a name found elsewhere in We (i, 157, ii, 149, 152 infra ). The affix refers to Ketel , father of the Uchtred who had land here c. 1180Lowth (Ke 1) (cf. also CW x, 430, NB 129), the pers.n. being from ON  Ketill . Cf. Strickland Randolph (infra ).
