Etymology

The modern form Outrun arises from the wrong analysis of the adverbial expression 'at Towtron ' as 'at Owtron '. The place is in the south-east corner of the parish on the Crook boundary and the name would seem to have referred originally to a tarn a little to the north-west of Outrun Nook now represented by a piece of boggy ground growing timber. 'Tófi's lake', from the ON  pers.n. Tófi (Feilitzen 384), v. tjǫrn .
