Etymology

Hawes, (le , the ) Hawes 1295 CW xviii, 136, 1554 Tullie 80, 1581 Kend i, 159, 1585–1618 PR(K) (freq )et freq to c. 1772AnctHo , (Hawes in Helsyngton , Hawes in Helsington ) 1382Chamb , 1620 Tullie 81, Hawsehouse 1583 PR(K); possibly the same as Le Howis 1275–85 Kend i, 134, Le Houwes 1292 ib 136; le Hawes 1554 Kend i, 292 is described as in Strickland Ketel, and may be a different place. The name is ME  haughes , from OE  haga 'enclosure'. Topographically, it is unlikely to be from OE  hals 'col, pass'. If it is identical with Le Howis the form has been influenced by the common ME  howe 'hill' (v. haugr ).
