Etymology

'Shieling amongst the sedges', v. sef , erg , cf. Seuerhbec (i, 35supra ). The location of Sever is not exactly known; in 1332 the wood of Sever was included with those of Threlsgrope (Levens), Mountjoy (Underbarrow), and Whitbarrow (Crosthwaite) in the manor of Underbarrow (Kend i, 143); the 1649 reference suggests a more precise location in the adjacent part of the neighbouring township of Crook.
