Etymology

Holme Lyon, Holmlyolfbank 1349 Ipm, Holmliolsbank 1349 Cl, Holme Lion 1836KCR . 'Liolf's water-meadow', v. holmr . This is an inversion compound (cf. Rigmaden i, 51supra ). The pers.n. is the well-evidenced ME  Ligulf , Liolf which because of its distribution is regarded as probably of Scandinavian origin (cf. Feilitzen 319–20).
