Etymology

Moserthwaite (lost), le Mosertwayt 1341 Kend i, 180, Moserthwayt (e )1345, 1375 Ipm, Moserthewayte 1383 Cl, Moserghthwayt 1383Pedw 78d(p).The first theme could be 'dairy farm on the bog', v. mos (mosi), erg , and be similar to Moser (i, 149infra ) and Mosser (Cu 422); but it is also possible for Moser - to be a local surname as in Mozergh Ho (i, 150infra ), v. þveit 'clearing'.
