Etymology

'Village with a church', v. kirkju-býr; the church is referred to in 1272 Pat (cf. Holy Trinity Church i, 118infra ). The affix -Kendal or -in Kendal is from the name of the Kent valley or the Barony of Kendal (i, 22supra ) to distinguish it from Kirkby Lonsdale (i, 42supra ) and Kirkby Stephen (ii, 9infra ); the full form of the name continued till the 18th century but the affix alone was coming into use as the name of the borough by the 15th century and is the only form that survives.
