Etymology

St Leonard's Hospital, 'the hospital of St. Leonard' 1222–46 Kend i, 6, 1301 Kend i, 13, 1427 Pat (the hospital of St. Leonard 'by Haye ') 1297 Pat, (the hospital of St. Leondard 'by the Castle') 1310 Ipm, the hospitall of Seynt Leonardes 1549 Kend i, 87, the hospitall of Sancte Leonards 1584 BRK, St . Leonard Spitle 1557 PR(K).This was a leper hospital (Kend i, 71, 176–7), now called Spital (infra ), which lies west of Haye (Hayclose i, 121infra ) in the northeast of the parish. On its remains cf. RCHM 204.
