Etymology

'Clearing used for a stud of horses', v. stōd , lēah , cf. Studley Royal 192infra , from which it is distinguished as 'Roger' from one of the Roger de Mowbrays in whose fee it was (KI 46). 'Nether Studley' is equated with Plumpton in 1608 FF. Studley Roger is called Studley Parva as late as 1841TA and 'Sowth ' to distinguish it from Studley Royal (or Magna ) and North Studley respectively.
