Etymology

Magdalen's Fm, hospitalis (beate ) Marie Magdalenæ , hospicio (beate ) Marie Magdalenæ , hospici (beate ) Marie Magdalenæ 1228, 1342 Rip i, 1460 RipAct, 1533MinAcct , 'the bedehouse beside the Mawdelayns ' 1485 RipAct, the Hospitall of St Marye Magdaleyne 1584Dep , Magdales 1580 PRRip, Mawdleines 1587 ib, Magdalens 1827M . The hospital was founded by Archbishop Thurstan of York in the early twelfth century (Rip i, 228). The bedehouse or chapel (v. bed-hūs) remains (cf. RipAct 50 note); cf. also le Ladykyrk 168supra .
