Etymology

'Clearing used for a stud of horses', v. stōd , lēah and cf. Studley Roger 190supra . The spellings with Es - for S - are AN (cf. IPN 103).The circumstances in which it became rg ' (? sic for regis ) and Royal are uncertain.
