Etymology

Hewick Bridge, pons de Hewyk '1362 Works, 1371 Rip iv, Hewyk brygge , Hewik brygge 1444 Pat, Hewyk brig 1488 RipAct, Huicke bridge 1577 Holinshed, v. brycg . The bridge carries the Ripon-Boroughbridge road across the R. Ure; it was broken and in need of repair in 1362 (Works 271), and in 1371 William de Dalton wished to leave money for its upkeep (Rip iv, 101). The earliest reference to the bridge is 1290 YI (Bridge Hewick supra ).
