Etymology

Palleys Crags, le Palizstane l. 12 Font, Pawlez Stanez 1540 Fount, Pallit stones 1576 Wheater, Pallas -Stone commonly called Abbot 's Hand 1767 Comm. Probably 'stone by the palisade', v. palis , stān ; it was on the boundary between the Forest of Knaresborough and lands of Fountains Abbey (hence 'Abbot's Hand', cf. also Abbotts Garth f.n. infra ). Cf. Palace Ho iii, 189supra for a similar p.n.
