Etymology

'The monks' farmstead', v. munuc , tūn . The allusion is unknown, but the place may have formed part of the original lands granted by King Alchfrith to Wilfrid in 661 for the foundation of a monastery at Ripon (cf. Liberty of Ripon 77supra ). It is later called 'Bishop' to distinguish it from Moor and Nun Monkton iv, 257, v, 2 supra , because it was in the Ripon estates of the Archbishops of York (YCh 7, etc., DB).
