Etymology

'Stony forest-glade or clearing,, v. stān (replaced by ON  steinn as in Stainburn 48, South Stainley 95supra ), lēah ; 'North' in relation to South Stainley. The OE  spelling on Nyrran Stanlege is taken by Ekwall to refer to South Stainley (v. 95supra ), but in view of its being part of the Archbishop's estates it is more probably 'the nearer part of North Stainley'; in DB Nyrran Stanlege and Norð Stanlege are respectively Estanlai and Nordstanlaia , the former being grouped with Sutton in the DB Recapitulation and the latter with Sleningford.
