Etymology

Skittergate Gutter, Skyteryk 1228 Rip i, Sketrike 1536 ib iii, 1546 YChant, Skitrick 1625 PRRip. The name denotes 'a sewer' (v. scite (with sk - due to ON influence), ric , cf. Skitterick ii, 168supra ). What remains of it runs into the R. Ure east of the town. It is shown in Gent's map of 1733 crossed by Stonebridgegate further to the west, but in 1882 the western part of the brook had almost disappeared (Rip i, 62 note).
