Etymology

From OE  (æt þǣm ) clūderum '(at the) rocks', dat.pl. of clūder , a derivative of OE  clūd 'rock' and an unmutated form of the OE  clȳder found in Clitheroe La 78 (cf. Ritter 7, v. -um ). The spellings in -th - are due to ON  influence and those with Cluherum , etc. are AN (cf. High Melton i, 76supra ), v. Addenda.
