Parish in the County of West Riding of Yorkshire

This parish lying chiefly between the R. Nidd and R. Ure corresponds approximately to Riponshire (77supra ) and included the large estates of Fountains Abbey and the Liberties of the Archbishop of York and of the Chapter of Ripon (cf. T. S. Gowland's detailed account in YAJ xxxii, 43–85).Ripon itself is now a municipal borough. Bewerley was originally in the township of Dacre with Bewerley, and Fountains in Markington township, whilst Aismunderby with Bondgate (now in Ripon) formed a separate township. Ingerthorpe is now in the civil parish of Markington. Lindrick, Markenfield, Studley Royal and Warsill were extra-parochial.
