Etymology

Haddockstones, Haddokstanez , Haddocstanez , Haddokstanes 1198, 1431 Fount, Haddoksta (y )ns 1457 FountBurs, 1516–38 Fount, Haddokstaynes 1509 ib, Haddokstonys 1524 WillY, Haddokstone (z )1535 VE, 1547 Rip i, Haddockstaynes 1509Vyner , Haddockstones 1562 WillY, Hadockston als. Hadderston 1620 FF. The first el. is obscure; there is a Y dial. word haddock 'shock of corn', but this is usually thought to be a variant of hattock and a derivative of hat (NED s.v.); if that is so it is hardly likely to be found as haddok as early as the twelfth century. An OE  pers.n. Hadduc is a possibility; though not recorded, it would be a normal formation in -uc from the OE  pers.n. Hadda (cf. Redin 152 ff). 'Hadduc's stones', v. stān , steinn . Haddock Stones 58supra is of different origin.
