Etymology

Wath, Acchewath , Acchewad 1154–91RegAlb i, 65d, 71d, ii, 57d, Achewath 1170–9 ib i, 72, Youdenwath 1307 YI, Ewdinwath 1651 WillS. v. vað 'ford'. The original first el. is probably the ODan  pers.n. Áki (DB Achi , Aki , etc., Feilitzen 142); Youdenwath is Yeadon infra . It was a ford across the R. Nidd. On the loss of the first el. cf. Keld, Thwaite YN 260, 272.
