Stangerthwaite, Stangerwath 1279Ass 23d(p), Stangrewath 1340 Pat, 'bridge of Strangerwath ' (sic) 1379 ib, Stangerthwait (e )1624 Kend ii, 428et freq to 1865 OS. 'Ford with a pole', v. stǫng (gen. sg. stangar ), vað . The ford was across the Lune (1379 Pat).
