Etymology

The first el. is a pers.n. Man , which could be OE  Mann (Redin 8), but, as Ekwall (ScandsCelts 77) suggests, more probably an unrecorded OWScand  Mann , found in one or two Norw p.ns. (cf. NG iv, 185, iv, 48) and corresponding to ODan  Man (DaPN s.n.); it occurs (according to Mr R. Otterbjörk) as an OSwed  byname, and as a byname in Faroese Urð Manns (cf. Chr. Matras in Early English and Norse Studies (London 1963), 149), and doubtless as a pers.n. in Faroese Manssetur . The second el. is ON  erg 'shieling, hill-pasture', a loanword from Ir  airge (Gael  airigh ) found in other We p.ns. (v. Introd., Chr. Matras in NoB (1956), 51 ff, EPN i, 157, and esp. Ekwall, ScandsCelts 74 ff).
