Etymology

'Village with a church', v. kirkju-bȳr. Like Kendal (that is, Kirkby Kendal ) and Kirkby Stephen (i, 114, ii, 9 infra ), this place was the head of a large ecclesiastical parish. The affix is the name of the valley, v. Lonsdale (i, 23supra ).
