'The maiden's ridge', v. hryggr , mægden . This p.n. is an inversion-compound, a Celtic (Irish) type of composition introduced into NW England from Ireland by Norwegian Vikings (cf. Ekwall, ScandsCelts 13 ff); several other examples like Wath Sutton, Satearngrim , Crosscrake, Rigg Brunild , Brigsteer, CrossDormant, etc. (i, 57, 62, 99, 109, ii, 210, etc.) occur in We (v.
