Etymology

Marthwaite (lost), Marthwat Hy 8Rent , Mawthwaite 1789 PR(Md), Marthwaite 1806 ib, (Marthwaite Hill ) 1843TA . Possibly of the same origin as Marthwaite (YW vi, 264), 'ant-infested clearing', v. maurr , þveit . On the form Mar - cf. Phonol. §4, and for Mar - becoming Maw - cf. Clawthorpe (i, 58infra ).
