Etymology

'Farmstead near the end of a hill v. hōh , tūn , a common NCy p.n., cf. also New & Old Hutton, Hutton (i, 127, 131, 154 infra ). Roof is a feudal affix, but the person whose name it was has not been identified. In view of the great variety of spellings the original form of the pers.n. is uncertain, but the oldest spelling -riof and others like -reof , -riwe , -rive suggest, as Ekwall has pointed out, the OG  pers.n. Ricwulf in the form Riulf , Riolf etc. (FörstemannPN s.n.) with later loss of -l - through French influence; this OG  pers.n. was in use in England as Ricwulf (Searle s.n.), though Rīcwulf , as Dr Feilitzen points out, could be native OE.
