Etymology

Sealford, 1865 OS, Seylforth 1517, 1519 Kend ii, 231, 233, Sealefo (u )rd 1600, 1641 ib 286–7, 1651FF . Probably 'ford near the willow copse', v. sele 2 , ford . But the first el. may be a surname, as there was a Thomas Sele in the adjoining township of Kirkby Lonsdale in 1358 Kend ii, 310, cf. also Seals (i, 46infra ). The ford was across Sealford Beck.
