Etymology

'Farmstead near the fortification', v. ceaster (in its usual Northern form Caster -, cf. EPN i, 86§3), tūn ; ceaster usually denotes a Roman settlement, but no such remains have been found here. RCHM 66–7, however, records a stone circle and mound about 1 mile ESE of the village, which lies ¼ mile west of a Roman road (Road II, i, 19 supra ).
