Etymology

High Bendrigg, Bendriggin 1699 WillQ, Bendrigg (in Killington )1637FF , 1715 Will, 1743 NB 265, (High Bendrigg ) 1865 OS, possibly the ME  pers.n. Benne (a pet-form of Benedict , Bennet ), with an intrusive -d - in the cluster -nr - (cf. YW vii, 91 §46), or more probably OE  beonet 'bent-grass' (with -t – voiced before -r -), v. hrycg (replaced in the first spelling by ME  rigging 'ridge'), cf. Low Bendrigg (i, 127infra ).
