Etymology

'Ecga 's ham(m).' We should have expected Edgeham or the like, but there are other examples of Eg - for Egge -, Edge -; cf. Egford in Whatley (So) Egeforde 1327 SR, Eagle Hundred (Berks)Eglei 1086 DB, Eggelea 1175 P, and Egley infra 157.
