Etymology

Swellgutter (old 6″) is probably identical with La Swele 1342 Turner, Swull lane and close 1650ParlSurv , Sulgutter Lane 1765 R, Swell Gutter 1822 O.S., Swell Close 1842TA . This may be connected with the ModEng swilly , 'hollow place, gutter washed out by the soil, etc.,' v. NEDs. v. , but the forms are insufficient for any certain interpretation.
