Etymology

Purcombe Fm (SY 464971), Purcum 1656Hine , Purkham bridge 1687Hine , cf. Andrew Pircombe , William Pircombe 1327 SR, Andrew (de ) Pirecom (b )e , William (de ) Pirecom (b )e 1332 ib, Andrew Pircomb , Andrew Pyrecombe 1340 NI, Hutch3, 'pear-tree valley', from pirige , pyrige and cumb , cf. Purcombe in Marshwood par. and Purcombe Fm in Whitchurch C. par. both infra . The two Perhay Farms lie just ½ mile N from here at the head of the valley, so the two names are related: indeed Andrew Pyrecombe etc. may well be the same person as the Andrew atte Pyrie cited under Perhay.
