Etymology

Elwell Fm, Hr Elwell Fm & Lr Elwell Fm (S Y 411967), Ellewell '1332 SR, Elle -Wille 1372, Elwill , El (l )wyll 1417 SoDoNQ all (p), tenement called Elwel 1649Hine , Elwell Farm 1839TA . This could be 'Ella's spring', from the OE  pers.n. Ella and well(a), cf. Elworth in Abbotsbury par. supra . Alternatively 'elder-tree spring', with elle(r)n as first el., cf. Elwell PN D 36, 291, Elwill PN D 599. Several springs are marked 6″ nearby. Elwell in Upwey par. 1 247 has a quite different origin.
