Kaymes - etc. (note the persistent medial -m - rather than -n -) is uncertain, but it is most likely to be the surname of some early owner of the estate, cf. perhaps the f.n. East Caines (earlier Kaymes ) in Castleton par. 3 308. The reference to aquam de Kaynnes in villa de Netherbur '1288Ass should also be noted: here aquam de Kaynnes may well be elliptical for 'stream of Kaynneswoth ' and therefore refer to R. Woth (Brit) itself. The earliest form cited (from 1254 Pat) may be defective, or may not belong here.
