Etymology

Cullington (SY 473961), Colyndon (e )1327 SR, 1340, 1372 SoDoNQ all (p), Colyngdon (')1332 SR, 1402 SoDoNQ, 1433HarlRoll all (p), Colundon 1382 SoDoNQ (p), Colyngton 1431 FA (p), Colington Eliz ChancP, Collingdon Meaddow 1654Hine , Collington (2 small tenements) 1774 Hutch1, Callington (sic)1795 Boswell, Cotliton (sic)1811 OS, Coliton 1826 Gre. This name is probably manorial, from the surname Colyn (g )don of some family who once had lands here: note that all the forms from before the 16th cent, are used as surnames. The p.n. from which the surname is derived has not been identified, but clearly contains dūn 'hill' which would in any case not be topographically appropriate here: Cullington is relatively low-lying by R. Brit.
