Etymology

The original name Woth of this estate preserves the earlier name of R. Brit, cf. also Camesworth and Wooth Grange in this par. infra , Watford in Bradpole par. supra , and Watton in Symondsbury par. infra , all named from this river. For the meaning of Woth , v. RNs.infra . Lands here were held by the Bingham family from the early 13th cent., cf. William de Bing (e )ham 1231 FF, 1285 FA, John de Byng (g )(e )ham 1321, 1325 Drew, 1327 SR, William de Byngham 1370 Hutch3, 1377Marten , and for the same family v. Bingham's Melcombe in Melcombe H. par. 3 217.The early affix Chauel is also manorial, from another family with land here and at Ash supra , for the surname cf. Peter Chauel , William Chauel 1332 SR (taxed in S. Caundle and Wraxall respectively).
