Etymology

Sandley (1″, apparently misnamed or renamed Stanley 1902 6″) (ST 773248), Sandley Lodge (6″), (Gillingham ) Sandley 1609LRMB (p), Gt Sandley , Lt Sandley , Sandly Coppice 1839TA (p), probably to be identified with Sandhull (e )1292GillCt (p)et freq to 1428 FA (p), Sanhulle 1327SR (p), Sandehull 1329 FF (p), 1353 Pat (p), Sandhill 1330 Orig (p), Sandhullebrigg '1415, Saundell ' yate 1501GillCt , 'sandy hill', from sand and hyll , with brycg , geat . For the development of -hill to -ley (note the transitional form in -ell ' showing weak stress in a medial position), cf. Fowley W 273, EPN 1275.
