Etymology

Lodbourn (Fm) (ST 807273), Lurteborne 1438GillCt , Lodburn Bridge , which of old time was called the Bridge of Merford 1568 Hutch3, Lodborne 1609LRMB , Lotburn 1628 Hutch3, Ladborn Green 1811 OS, 'the dirty stream', from lort(e) and burna , cf. Ekwall RN 259 and an identical name in Winfrith N. par. 1 184. It was perhaps originally the name of (this stretch of) Shreen Water, by which stream the farm lies. Lodburn Bridge is now Bay Bridge supra ; the 1568 identification with the Bridge of Merford is wrong, v. Colesbrook infra .
