Etymology

Bay (ST 812270), Bay Bridge, Bay Fm. The bridge is Porridge Bay [Bridge]1791 Boswell, Pough 'fordebrig '1415, Powgh 'rygge brygge , Pokeryge brygge 1501GillCt , v. Bowridge Hill infra ; Bay no doubt represents ModE  bay2 'an embankment to form a dam' as in Bay Bridge W 303. Other early names for this bridge, also given in the bounds of the forest of Gillingham, are Lodburn Bridge , which of old time was called the Bridge of Merford 1568 ib (3 621) (v. Lodbourn Fm infra ), and (probably) Kingesbrigge Hy 3 (14) Cerne (v. cyning , brycg , cf. King's Mead infra ).
