Etymology

Named from Red Lane ('the red lane', v. rēad , lane ) in Todber par. infra . This place would be roughly central when the new hundred was formed in the 13th cent. by the amalgamation of Ferendone hundred with part of Gelingeham hundred (i.e. the 'out-hundred'). For further speculation as to why this name was chosen for the new hundred, v. N.H. Field, DoNHAS Newsletter 18 (December 1981), 6–9. In 1664 HTax, Redlane was also the name of a tithing in Sturminster Newton hundred.
