Etymology

Probably 'Bucge's clearing or wood', from the OE  fem. pers.n. Bucge and lēah, although it is possible that the first el. is ME  bugge 'a boggart, a hobgoblin', cf. Bugley W 158 which is apparently analogous, v. lane , strǣt . It should perhaps be noted that the earliest form of the p.n. in independent use (i.e. not used as a surname) is 1356GillCt .
