Etymology

Pickwell Fm is Pekewell c. 1379, 1400 (Cooper's Cuckfield 20, 121), 1403 IpmR and was the home of John de Pikewell (1327 SR) who seems to be the same as John de Pykehulle (1296 SR). The forms in well are perhaps corrupt. The place stands on a slight rise and may mean 'Pica's hill,' v. hyll .
