Historical Forms

  • Haselinge 1617 SAC58,17

Etymology

Hazeldean is probably identical with the home of Walter atte Haselyng 1327 SR (p) and Haselinge 1617 SAC 58, 17. ME  Haseling from OE  hæseling is clearly a place-name of the same type as Clavering (Ess, Nf), Thurning (Nth), which Ekwall shows (PN in -ing , 9, 15, 16) to be ing -derivatives, used in the singular only, of OE  clæfre, þyrne . Here we have a similar derivative from another plant-name, OE  hæsel. Cf. Bramble Bottom infra 418. The name means 'place overgrown with hazels.'
