Etymology

, Compstall Bridge 1608 Earw, Compstall Bridge &Compstall Bridge Mills 1831 Bry, Compstall 1842 OS, Compstall Bridge ('a populousvillage') 1860 White 872 , giving its name to a nineteenth - century c.p. formed out of Werneth , v. 258supra . No early material has been found , but the p.n. could be from cumb ' a valley ' and stall ' a place, a site ' or ' a fishery ' , since it lies beside R . Etherow under Beacom supra .
