Etymology

'Hāma's stone', from the OE  pers.n. Hāma (as in Hamnish He (DEPN)) and stān, cf. Homaston 1473 ChRR (p). The site of the stone is unknown, but it may have been at Mutlow 81infra . The meeting-place was later fixed at Macclesfield, the administrative centre of the royal Manor and Forest of Macclesfield, cf. Hundredfeld 119infra . The hundred abuts upon La, YW, Db and St to north, east and south, where it is bounded by the rivers Mersey, Goyt and Dane, except that Longdendale is north of R. Mersey and R. Etherow. To the west it adjoins the hundreds of Bucklow and Northwich. The eastern part of the hundred is mountainous moorland on the Millstone Grit edges, formerly in the Forest of Macclesfield, containing the sources of the rivers Goyt, Dane, Mersey and Bollin, and rising to the greatest elevation in the county at Shutlingsloe 160infra . The western part contains a lower, undulating terrain of glacial drift boulder-clay, sand and marl, except for an escarpment of Keuper sandstone protruding through the drift cover at Alderley Edge. The DB hundred was almost co-extensive with the later one, including the townships of Cranage, Twemlow, Swettenham and Kermincham, now in Northwich Hundred 333infra , but did not include Snelson, Northenden and Great Warford 93, 234, 104infra , which were in Bochelau (Bucklow) Hundred 330infra .
