Etymology

The ancient parish now forms three c.ps., Tintwistle, Stalybridge and Longdendale. It comprised 1. Godley (now included in Hyde c.p. 258 supra ), 2. Hattersley (now included in Hyde and Longdendale c.ps.), 3. Hollingworth (part now included in Mossley La, and the remainder in Longdendale c.p.), 4. Matley (now included in Dukinfield, Hyde, Stalybridge & Longdendale c.ps., cf. 258supra ), 5. Mottram in Longdendale (now included in Longdendale c.p.), 6. Newton (now included in Hyde and Dukinfield c.ps. 258 supra ), 7. Stayley (now included, with Stalybridge La, and part of Matley supra , in the c.p. of Stalybridge Ch), 8. Tintwistle (of which the hamlet of Micklehurst is now included in Mossley La, and the rest is a c.p. in Ch). In this or Stockport parish was probably the lost place Hofinchel , Hofinghel DB, v. 165supra .
