Etymology

Stalybridge (101–9698), Stalybridge 1687 Earw, Stayley Bridge 1788 ib, 'the bridge at Stayley', v. brycg , cf. Stayley supra . This is probably the site of Staliffard 1332 Sheaf, v. ford . Stalybridge is the name of a hamlet in La, v. La 29, which extended to the Ch bank of R. Tame in the eighteenth century, and has since superseded Stayley as the township-name.
