Etymology

The final el. is twisla 'a fork (of a river or valley)'. The village is above the meeting of Arnfield Brook and R. Etherow. For the first el., Ekwall (DEPN) suggests a Brit river-name identical with Teign D 14, RN 398, which he would bring from a derivative of Brit *tagnā 'sprinkling' (Welsh taen ). The place was occasionally called after Longdendale 2supra . The Tyngel -, Tingel -, Tengel - forms from Eyre probably represent mis-written Tynges - etc.
