Etymology

Middle Wood, Middle Wood 1831 Bry, Midlewood 1611LRMB 200, probably Cartelachehurst 1363ChFor , from the lost stream-name Cartelache 17supra with hyrst 'a hill, a wood'. The later name is 'wood in the middle', v. middel , because it is in or adjoins the three townships Poynton, Norbury and Marple, cf. Middlewood Rd, Middilschawe 209, 211supra . Middlewood and Mossley infra , (the district ofMossley and Middlewood 1849TA ), may represent the district known as (pastura de ) Bluntebroc e13 (1287) Court, Blentebrok e13 (1288) Eyre , Bluntesbroch e13 (1357) ChFor , Bluntesbrok 1357ib , Bluntesbrok infra forestam de Maccl '1366Eyre , from the old name of Bollinhurst & Norbury Brooks, v. 16supra . The southern boundary of Marple & Wybersley ran along High Lane infra in e13, but now it follows Bollinhurst Brook.
