Etymology

Broadoak (101–939875), The Broadoak 1819 Orm2, Hopwoods 1831 Bry, cf. Hopwoods Mdw infra , probably from a surname Hopwood . Adjacent is a moated site (Moat 1842 OS, site of Roman Camp 1849TAMap ), probably citum manerii de Torkyngton aqua circumclusum cum pomeriis et gardinis ibidem 1465 JRL, Orm2, also called 'a certain manor house inclosed with great ditches and water, built by John de Legh' 1384ChFor , and le Legh hous c.1350 JRL, 'the house of the Legh family' (v. hūs), at le Grauereslond '1363ChFor ('the digger's land', from the ME  occupational surname Grauer 'one who digs' and land ) where John de Legh is reported to have taken in and cleared sixty acres of royal woodland and built a hall of two chambers and a kitchen, moated, and outside the moat a barn, stables, wards etc., c.1354, cf.
